Bien-être: Sicilienne

I'm getting behind again on posting, and can only partially blame it on fiddling with my neighborhood map (although I've added photographs to all but 4 places of the SE of Yotsu 3-choume Station, which is the biggest neighborhood map).

Friday night, went for a sixth cake to Bien-être, in the Yoyogi area (actually Uehara) and got Sicilienne for eating in. This was pistachio again from them, this time with cassis (black current. The bottom is a sort crunch chocolate slab. The top layers is pistachio gelatin which easily peels off. The cassis layer is a little wet and is surrounded by regular cake (somewhere between sponge and biscuit). The gelatin put me off, though it was not too bad. Actually, it was definitely good, but was more a sort of traditional sugary fruity cake than I'm very excited about, so it was somewhat disappointing. But still, definitely good, which is a step up from the previous day perfectly respectable.

Place around with finding an alternate route and repeated past mistakes then left me looping back to my starting road at one point (but further in the correct direction), so I ran 11+ km rather than the ~10 km that I could do it in by my usual route (which is not the shortest route, which I may try again now that I know that jogging through Harajuku at night is fine (it's not too crowded).

The Bake: Sicilienne

Went down to Shibuya to a little shop called The Bake and got their Sicilienne (獅子リアン; 500 yen), which is pistachio mousse above milk chocolate mousse with cherries and a base of chocolate biscuit. It's good, but the cherries don't really add much. This is about what I expected from my memory of earlier visits. If I went again, I might try the cheese cake, which was the next most promising thing. Of course, I appreciate that they are open until 8 pm, even on a Monday night.

The running was fine, being about 11 km/h there and 10 km/h back with cake, 5 km each way.

Ran out to potentially great shop Yu Sasage. I should probably mark this route (and routes for other main destinations), since it is a pretty good route and this shops seems like it at least is going to end up as an excellent shop. Most of the run is along Tokyo City Road 431 Tsunohazuiisumi-town Line, which is also an old water transport road. Lots of parks. From the end, at Inogashira Road, you can pick of a park route that crosses the train line and puts you in front of Meiji University. Passing that and the neighboring temple complex, you can get back a on a series of linear parks and parallel roads that runs parallel to the main highway (4) all the way to where 20 splits off. At the split I took 20 (after Ring Road 8, you can take a local road, but I remembered that it's pretty crowded for running, so I took the longer route) to the light just west of Yu Sasage before cutting south and then back a block for Yu Sasage. It's about 12.6 km and I managed a moderate pace. I was slow coming back (although I might have managed moderate but for the congestion around Shinjuku Station) a slightly longer 12.75 km route, due to staying on the park on the east side of Meiji University too long (although knowing that there is a relatively big public toilet building there, is good, as the main strip park on the other side has just one more limited one).

That gives me a 2-day distance of 51.5 km, which might be the most I've done post-injury, so more than I probably should have done after a training break for a cold (which my left knee was quite willing to tell me fairly early on, although I slowed down and kept it under control). The 4-to-7-day distance then is 63.3 km, which doesn't leave me a lot for the next 3 days in my 7-day running budget of 85 km (which I can raise to 95 km after Wednesday). Of course, I could just rest tomorrow, but it's a holiday (for the Spring Equinox), so I'd like to get out. Perhaps I'll take the bicycle to Jiyugaoka, for Paris S'éveille (which I can run to during the week, theoretically, but is a little tough and uses a lot of kilometers) and maybe Cuoca, although in the latter case, I should check Mitsukoshi first, which is in the opposite direction.

But to the cake, that being a main theme. I didn't prepare my camera, but the phone camera worked reasonably okay, even if I can't see the image on the screen well enough when I'm taking the picture. The cake is the Sicilienne, which was introduced in December (on their Facebook page, anyway) and is 500 yen. Outside, is pistachio mousse (with maybe pistachio cream on top, along with pistachios and a cherry), and cherry mousse and gel inside. Something that sounds like "Fond du Roche" adds crunch, but I can't find a Japanese phonetic French to actual French translation. The cake looks like it might be gelatinous, but actually, at least for me, the outside was more like a thick sauce than gelatin, and covered an airy pistachio mousse. The taste and test was excellent. I could say that this was great, but I don't really like cherry so much in my cake, so I'm going to have to hold back with excellent, even if it seems perfect for what it is.

11.4 km to Bien-Etre Patisserie and back: Saint Marc

Tried running over to Bien-Etre. They close at 8:30, so that's reasonable. Ran along the road south of JR Chuo train line, swung north to get around Meiji Gingu just outside the Yamanote loop, came down the west side of Yoyogi Park and went west where Yamanotedoori meets Inogashiradoori. Kind of dark and the path could be little more even, but it's quite wide most of the way and not very crowded. I ran closer to Shinjuku Gyoen (the big government park) on the way back, but ended up with about the same distance both ways. Wasn't really up to going fast, given the new uncertain route and conditions, but did 11.4 km in 1 11'22'', which is okay.

Got the Saint Marc for 520 at Bien-Etre. It was very good, but not great (don't think I've ever had a great one) and the remaining selection was somewhat limited and did not interested me, so I won't be going back soon. Nice, bright, and clean little cafe space, though, so I'd definitely stop in there more if it were convenient, but of course, if it were convenient, so would be Fraoula, which is great, and Asterisque, which seems much more high end, is just another block, and is good and popular (I could get there too, if I wanted to add places to jog to during the week, since they're open until 8 pm).
